As a viewer, if I can't identify with or be affected by the characters and their lives, special effects and a pretty smile will not do it for me. The other day I found myself tearing up at Jennifer Beals's horrible horrible dance audition in FLASHDANCE. A pseudo-stripper's breakdancing made me CRY, Julie. Because she was livin' her dream, dammit.
