One of the best things I ever did for my writing was becoming a reader, and fortunately it's for one of those highly regarded competitions mentioned in the HOW DO I GET A REP post here the other day. It's really incredible how true these categories and stats are, my top 3 pet peeves are 1)format 2) generic character names ala COP #1, UNDERTAKER #2 and 3) twins triplets and other indistinguishable characteristics. Read on even if it's not for a comp with all the online resources there's no reason not to read, it helps you write, really.

Pitch your idea to anybody, and then see how they react. That's the best place to start a story.

I have written all three, and in order to boot.
My first attempt at a script essentially looked like a stage play with a few pointed action lines written as prose. My second was a Tarantino wannabe, that I was crazy jazzed about until I read it after I had written a third script and realized it was silly. Then I wrote half of a couple scripts and finished another, all of which were technically sound and structurally solid. But they all fell into the story category of 'things happen, but who cares'.
The cat that writes a selling spec their first time out is amazing, but it ain't me. I've got like seven 'fade outs' in the can and feel I'm just now up to snuff.
