The Buck Stops Here

Hello, everyone. For any of you who may be following the online controversy, aspersion has been cast upon the first round judging criteria and methodology of The Silver Screenwriting Competition. Some of the rumors have been wild and some wildly inaccurate but the bottom line is with a competition that has grown as quickly as ours has, we do need to take a look at methods to depersonalize and mechanize the first round judging. We’ve gone from a very mom-and-pop business to one much, much larger and comprehensive. With that growth comes more responsibility and constant re-evaluation of how we get our judging done.

It doesn’t matter how these rumors got started, by whom or for what reason, what matters is that I am the boss and I take responsibility for what is said – good and bad. I stand by my competition, my script coverage business, each and every reader and judge whom I employ. I only work with the best and the long history and reputation we have at The Script Department attests to that.

But one thing is crystal clear: The Silver Screenwriting Competition has grown exponentially and it’s time for us to address first round judging in a new way. Anyone who has spent two minutes or less with me personally knows that I am a professional and one of the kindest, most honest people you will ever meet in your life. Unfair and untrue accusations hurt more for that reason. But I do see that mistakes were made and I do not shy away from my responsibility to every writer who submitted. It is our intention at the Silver Screenwriting Competition to be as thorough and professional as any other competition out there if not better. This controversy has raised the bar for all first round judging everywhere.

If you have concerns about the competition, you are welcome to call my private office number (323-300-6051) between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday – Friday and have a dialogue with me. If any entrant would like a full refund, you will receive it promptly. If you would like to send me your script and discuss it over the phone or Skype, I am at your service. You can email me by clicking HERE.

Please note: I will be out of town from September 2 – 6 for the Labor Day weekend.

We are announcing the top 10 scripts tomorrow, on schedule, and each and every one of us here, but primarily me, Julie Gray wants to let you know that we run this competition with heart and integrity and if a reader was publicly bitter about the process, if some of you have been misled to think that your entry fee is a coverage fee rather than an administrative fee, it is my responsibility to make that right. It is more important to me to run both my personal and business affairs with integrity than it is to wonder who is saying what and what their agenda is. I have one agenda: to do right by every writer who entered. I do not give credence to malicious rumor, only to the essence hidden within them - something needs to change.

Again, please call 323-300-6051 or email mefor a full refund or with any questions or concerns you may have.

Good on you Julie. I wasn’t an entrant, but if I was I’d really appreciate this post. It fits with the sense of you I have from reading this blog regularly & gives me confidence to enter next time.

I’ve always admired your integrity and directness in all your posts. I don’t know how anyone would have been misled… I must have read the Silver Screenwriting rules and it’s website a dozen times before I entered; and I don’t think any of it was misleading.

I feel like my money was well spent and will be submitting again next year. Thanks for running the contest!

Hi Julie. I have been following the online controversy, and this is good to hear. Writing is SUCH HARD WORK and I strongly believe every writer who is shelling out his hard earned money to a competition should be able to rest assured that the judging is fair. I think people were justifiably outraged about some of the things that they heard about the competition. That said, I’m smart enough to know that some of the people fomenting the drama in this case did have an agenda of their own. Own of them who was most venemous on the boards I came to find out is one of your competing script consultants. Nothing disgusts me more than someone so bloodthirsty that they try to lift themselves up by stomping their boot on the back of someone else’s neck! Anyway, thanks for doing the right thing here- better late than never.

    Hi Julie,
I knew you would solve this problem with grace. As I read your blogs every week, I believe you have amazing leaderships. After all that hatred from Done Deal Pro! Julie, you held your ground and never once let those haters and odd bunch and unprofessional guys from Done Deal Pro get to you. I recall how Done Deal wrote so much negative an unfair and unresearched things on you. When in fact it was not your fault. It is very very difficult to know everything and supervise everyone one in a business. And on that point, Julie you are doing a fantastic job leading screenwriters into a bright and promising future. You did the best you can with the problem.
I sometimes read how nasty and negative and very disturbed the posts from Done Deal Pro was towards you. And the real truth is that Done Deal Pro and its management did not take one minute to reduce the unprofessional attitude of their Members. The owner I believe his name is Mr. Will, sorry I misplaced his last name (or he might go under different names, because it is very common for the mods and onwers to use additional fake names on forums for marketing purposes). I swear, when I read http://www.justeffing.com, it is so refreshing and educational and truthful. But when I read the forums at Done Deal Pro, these guys come across and crazy and disrespecful and very un-family and destructive, and talk with contradictory tone that would make Sybil blush. I feel sorry for them.

I did not know of anything controversial and even if I did I would not ask for my money back.

I know and accept that these things are subjective and I took this as an opportunity to make my work better — which at the end of the day is what really matters.

I feel comfortable with Julie’s leadership and integrity in any endeavor she is involved with, even though we have never met – she clearly is a smart, talented, stand up gal and though I don’t know what the issue is/was – I’m willing to bet the instigator is just simply having a hard time taking the rejection, criticism and subjectivity that comes with the territory.

I’m also willing to bet Julie will be around a lot longer than they will.
