This is time of year when we light the Chanukah candles and think of miracles, past, present and future. We reflect upon of the meaning of tikkum olam – repairing the world.

With so many things going on in the news in and outside of Hollywood, it’s easy to lie down and just go with the flow and feel as if we cannot make a difference. Things can sometimes feel very discouraging. The economy, global warming, studio lawsuits, cyber-bullying and crime, spam, Korea, politics… what are we to do?

The world is indeed shrinking; with the advent of exponentially exploding technology, more than at any other time on earth, we are able to connect with each other. We can let that devolve into inane online feuds and gossip or we can use it to create new visions for expression that pull us together not tear us apart. How about using film as something more than an avenue for money, career, fame or box office receipts?

I have a dream. A dream of a non-profit center for writing and short film making in the Middle East. Imagine bringing women together from different cultures, to express themselves through film and through writing. I love teaching and inspiring and working with writers from all over the world but I have a soft spot for women who otherwise don’t have the resources, confidence or tools to express themselves. It is a passion of mine. I am a great believer in “putting things out to the universe” so to speak, and I know there are many people out there who already involved in programs like my nascent idea and much, much more.

Take a few minutes this holiday season to look up some of these organizations and make a small contribution, whether that’s monetarily, or better, with your time and your creativity. We can repair the world, one film at a time.

A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality. ~ John Lennon
