Living the Life Less Ordinary

As I prepare to leave the US for the exotic and dusty shores of the Middle East, I find that I am increasingly far from my comfort zone. It’s scary, in other words. Yes, I’ll be blogging, twittering and Facebooking, not to mention emailing and consulting – you may not notice much of a difference, actually. But I will. Not to mention the work I plan to do with my new endeavor, Stories Without Borders.

You know when sometimes you see something inspirational and marvel that you came across it, as if it were meant for your eyes? I saw this drawing the other day and it really made my day. I hope it makes yours too!

Scary, but how exciting. I love change, I love to immerse myself in other culture, it reinvents me, or at least brings something out that’s lain dormant. The wonderful thing is though, that in this digital world, as you say, you can still keep in touch with everything you know. I lived in Dubai a long time ago, before it became the Vegas of the Middle East, at a time when the desert met the sea and I could (only try) to throw a Frisbee with eloquence. The experience was invaluable, and not to name drop, but my best friend there; the current King’s son to open some deliciously wonderful doors and keep them open well after they should’ve closed. Oh how we used to run round the palace, his effing private bathroom bigger than any apartment I’ve ever lived in, in fact, lined with so many colognes and all sorts of stuff essential for a poseur in a hot sticky country, I thought half the time I was in the Duty Free shop at the Airport… in fact, I’m sure there was a car in the corner being raffled off…. Couldn’t get used to the servants bowing at me though every time I came downstairs (and always a different staircase; a maze and amazing that place was) telling them I was just a poor wee boy from Glasgow myself. Anyway, you’ll have fab exciting times as an ex-pat, will meet wonderfully eccentric people and have tons to blog about. I’m envious, its been six years since I upped and off to plunge into the deep end of the unknown only to surface back in my comfort zone. You’ll make the magic happen, I have no doubt.

SP, I enjoy your every word. I love your expressive, evocative writing. I would love to go to Dubai! I fear I cannot, with my Israeli passport. Maybe try my US one :)
