We interrupt our usual programming here on Just Effing to let you know that I am safe.
I wish for a quick end to this recent outbreak of war for everybody living in this region, Israeli and Palestinian alike.
I wrote an article for the Huffington Post if you are interested in my take on the situation and this experience. Additionally, I want to point you to a gorgeous article my friend Dahlia Litwick, a senior editor at Slate wrote.
Ever the writer, I know that this experience, as frightening as it is, is only deepening my well of empathy and understanding. I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would be living in a city where air raid sirens and explosions have become a part of the daily routine.
The conflict in this region has been going on for my entire life and started long before that. I remember seeing the conflict on the news – all the frightening, upsetting images – and thinking MY GOD what is WRONG with those people?! It just goes on and on. But I believe in hope. I really, really do. I will not be dissuaded from thinking that someday, someway, through diplomacy and courage and faith, that we can do better here.
If you are interested in learning more about the conflict in the Middle East, here are some really great reads. The first, by Thomas Friedman is a very readable primer on the history of the conflict here. If you are so inclined, I would start there.
From Beirut to Jerusalem, by Thomas Friedman
The Great War for Civilisation by Robert Fisk
Sons of Hamas by Mosab Hassan Yousef
Awakening Islam by Stephanie Lacroix
Thank you for the hundreds of emails wishing me well. Just know that I am perfectly fine and Just Effing is Just Effing going on no matter what. I am available for answering your screenwriting questions or giving you notes on your scripts as usual. In fact, it is really great to have my regular routine so send me some reading!
